Blood donation is a gift of life. The American Red Cross is dedicated to providing the community with a safe and reliable blood supply. Blood is a precious resource for which there is no substitute. With the life span of blood cells as little as 5 days for platelets and 42 days for red cells, the American Red Cross depends on healthy members of the community to give blood each and every day. One pint of blood can save up to three lives. At least one out of every 10 hospital patients – one patient every two seconds – receives blood. There is no substitute for donated blood as a form of treatment for injuries and certain illnesses.
The Loudoun County Chapter works with the Greater Chesapeake and Potomac Blood Services Region to support American Red Cross Blood Services in Loudoun County. Blood donors are recruited and bloodmobile collection sites scheduled in cooperation with the Chapter.
The American Red Cross provides about half of the blood transfused in the United States. The Greater Chesapeake and Potomac Blood Services Region collects, tests and prepares blood products including whole blood; red blood cells; platelet concentrate; single donor platelets, apheresis, cryoprecipitate and fresh frozen blood.
To be eligible to donate blood you must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good general health. Donors can safely give blood every 56 days. Please bring some form of positive identification with you such as a driver's license, blood donor card or work or school ID with a photo.
